According to Sky's Liz Bates, the UK is on the verge of electing a new prime minister, but it is still unclear who will be the front-runners and backers.
Even though Rishi Sunak
hasn't officially declared his candidacy yet, he is currently leading the race
for number 10 and the only candidate to publicly garner the support of 100 MPS.
However, there is a significant obstacle in the way. Boris Johnson was pictured
on the plane with his wife Carrie after returning from a family vacation when
the path back to number 10 became clear. His focus was still on his lifelong
love for Frontline politics. Apparently, he has been calling coworkers to try
to convince them that he has changed, but he still has the same unique style
and is still dividing opinion among the party's big names. Former Home
Secretary Priti Patel tweeted in support, saying that he has the mandate and a
proven track record of making the right decisions, while former Ally Lord Frost
said he'll always be a hero for delivering Brexit but we must move on. It has
only been three months since he was forced We need a prime minister who is
focused relentlessly and consistently with a laser-like focus on the issues
facing the country. I think it's very difficult to see how Boris could be prime
minister if he is absorbed and distracted by all of that, but the Specter of
more Scandal hasn't stopped others backing his return. That will involve
witnesses, and I'm assuming it will involve him giving oral evidence. Since the
former Chancellor is so far ahead, but all eyes are on Boris Johnson and
whether he can get enough support from MPS to advance to the next level, here's
someone I think who is not only a proven winner but also a proven prime minister
who has helped this country through some really difficult national and
international problems. We once again face a crisis in the cost of living and
face other national and international challenges. When members would speak, he
would almost certainly be reinstated in number 10.His team says privately that
he has the numbers, but publicly he doesn't. The first to start was Penny
Mordant, who finished third last time and is currently in the same position
with little chance of progressing. Now the former Chancellor is leading,
opening up a big gap in the latest race for number 10.We don't have any answers
on that at the moment. Liz, any update on whether Boris Johnson has reached the
magic 100 and, even if he does, will he stand uh, we don't have any answers on
that at the moment. I think it's worth worth first of all noting just the speed
of this contest. It was Thursday that Liz trusted down as the Prime Minister;
it's Saturday, and we've got two clear Front Runners in Rishi Sunak and Boris
Johnson Rishi Sunac is set to be the next prime minister because he is the only
one who has met that threshold of 100 MPS. This could all change, of course, if
Boris Johnson also hits that Target. I think there are two things to note
today. First, it is clear that the momentum is behind the former Chancellor
because he is the one receiving the big endorsements from people who you may
not naturally assume to be Richie Sunx supporters Kenny Badinock. Penny Morden,
of course The other thing that's worth noting today is that a source close to
Boris Johnson has said that the former prime minister does have the numbers to
get over the line. This has raised quite a few eyebrows here in Westminster
because it would really put him in a pretty unbeatable position. The former
deputy prime minister Dominic Rabb Lord Frost also served in the chances
cabinet and is now supporting Rishi Sunak. There are still 160 conservative MPs
who have not publicly declared their positions, so this could all change
drastically within the next 24 or 48 hours. The vote itself will actually take
place on Monday; if there are still two candidates, it will be Friday because
it will go to the membership; however, look within a week, we will know who is
going to replace Liz trust in number 10. So why aren't those people willing to
say in public if they are backing him? There are no answers on that tonight.
